CZ Regulars 1-20 updated as of 1/21/16

Scott Number:

1 F++ OG paper on most of gum and few sps, SE at top (or clipped), looks good so gets C&H lifetime guarantee, http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz1se.jpg $140

The next two are in this photo http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz1mintused.jpg

1 just F to F+ WG, 1 slightly short perf at top, bright color and attractive, looks very good and has C&H lifetime guarantee, ex-Gibbs $190

1 used -- I dont like the looks of the overprint so, even though it was in Irwin Gibbs collection, Im holding off on selling it

These are in this photo http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2mintused.jpg :

2 just F to F+ WG, lifetime C&H guarantee, ex-Gibbs $170

2 Im also trying to figure this one out: even though the E looks good with that hook upward on the bottom right, the overprint seems too tall. Also from Irwin, but am holding off for now (also has a tear/crease at LR)

2 F no gum, but no faults! Overprint also looks good so it gets C&H lifetime guarantee (bottom stamp of this scan http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2mints.jpg $95

2 almost F/VF WG, some somewhat blunted perfs at left but none short, signed Perry http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2fvfwg.jpg $175

2 F+ LC, three short perfs and a bend, C&H lifetime guarantee http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2sps.jpg $45

2 F+ WG few short perfs and a bunch that are shortish, light corner bend, no cert so lifetime C&H guarantee http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2ogsp.jpg $78

The next 3 are in this photo http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz23s.jpg The 3rd stamp down (and #3) have both been sold

2 F/VF+ LC 5 short perfs from being clipped, really nicely centered, no certificate but looks good so it has a lifetime C&H guarantee $85

2 just VG part gum, couple short perfs, Philatelic Foundation photo certificate $85

2 VG perfs cut at top, WG but fault free. Very fresh and bright color http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2wg.jpg $130

2 cover also sold

3 VG OG with some waxy spots and some slight glassine on back (esp at upper right), one slightly short perf at top http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz3vg.jpg $140

3 F+ no gum, 1 slightly short perf and some tiny ink stains at top, lifetime C&H guarantee http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz3ng.jpg $100

3 F/VF large margins, one slightly short perf but faultfree (paper on back, could be soaked off) http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz3fvf.jpg $145

3 F/VF very light cancel on faded small cover, stamp well centered but overprint faded, self-addressed Perry cover, nice spacefiller http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz3faded.jpg $85

Even after doing this for 40 years, I still find it difficult to identify forgeries of 1st issue overprints. However, here is some help: read pages 51-5 in this: www.canalzonestudygroup.com/Issue145.pdf

but especially pages 54-55. Dick Bates does a great job of explaining the difference in color and shape between good and fake overprints. Look at these two:

http://canalzonestamps.com/images/cz2good3fake.jpg

Although the overprint color is too dark in the scan, notice how the #3 has a full, complete print of the letters in CANAL ZONE, while (as Bates says) the overprint has a ridge of ink in the center of the letters, with the ink becoming less heavy toward the edges of the individual letters.

This is one way to tell a fake from a good overprint. Its important to get 1-3s all expertized by the APS, PSE or PF (see index page), or make sure it is signed by JC Perry, JM Bartels or Colman+; I sell many without certificates because I dont have the time to send them in, but I greatly encourage buyers to get certificates for them all. (I price them a little lower so you can afford them!) I will refund purchase price, postage and cert fees if not good.
