Even after doing this for 40 years, I still find it difficult to identify forgeries of 1st issue overprints. However, here is some help: read pages 51-5 in this: www.canalzonestudygroup.com/Issue145.pdf
but especially pages 54-55. Dick Bates does a great job of explaining the difference in color and shape between good and fake overprints. Look at these two:

Although the overprint color is too dark in the scan, notice how the #3 has a full, complete print of the letters in CANAL ZONE, while (as Bates says) “the overprint has a ridge of ink in the center of the letters, with the ink becoming less heavy toward the edges of the individual letters.”
This is one way to tell a fake from a good overprint. It’s important to get 1-3s all expertized by the APS, PSE or PF (see index page), or make sure it is signed by JC Perry, JM Bartels or Colman+; I sell many without certificates because I don’t have the time to send them in, but I greatly encourage buyers to get certificates for them all. (I price them a little lower so you can afford them!) I will refund purchase price, postage and cert fees if not good.
